Scholarships in Canada

Many scholarships are available for international students who wish to study in Canada. These can help cover the cost of tuition and other expenses related to your studies. Scholarship funding comes from a variety of sources, including the government, universities and private organizations.

You must research before applying to know the eligibility criteria and the last date of application for different scholarship programs.

Below are some of the well-known scholarships funded by the Govt. of Canada for Indian students who want to study in Canada-

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) provides brilliant students from Commonwealth countries with the opportunity to pursue advanced studies and research for postgraduate and doctoral degrees.

The scholarship includes travel and living allowance, as well as tuition fees. Additionally, the scheme offers Graduate Student Exchange Programs (GSEP), which provide funding of up to $10,000 for 5-6 months.

National Research Council of Canada (NRCC)

Students of master’s in engineering and doctoral in natural science and engineering are eligible to apply for NRCC scholarships.

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute offers scholarships for students pursuing Bachelor, Master, and M.Phil. programs in recognised Indian universities. These scholarships allow the students to research their area of interest at a Canadian university.

The duration of the research program is 8-12 weeks.

There is the option of doing an e-course or even an e-internships in one of the Canadian universities that come under the SICI network.

This fellowship allows recipients to receive CAD 500-1,000 to help cover expenses that their home institution does not provide. This can include costs related to a subscription to online meeting software, internet connection, telephone bills, affiliation fee or registration fees to access library or lab facilities.

IDRC Research Awards

IDRC Research Awards offers scholarships to students from developing countries. Students who enroll in master’s or doctoral programs are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program is designed for graduate students. It’s available for various courses in Canada.  

In order to apply for the prestigious OGS program in the province of Ontario, students must first receive and accept an offer of admission from a participating university within the region and obtain a valid study permit.

The OGS scholarships are worth $5,000 per session. You could receive CAD 10,000 for two sessions or CAD 15,000 for three. However, it will only cover one-third of your total costs.

Each award is tenable for one year (two to three academic sessions). The value and duration are determined by the awarding graduate unit and details of which will be mentioned in your offer letter

The duration and value of these awards vary depending on the academic unit, but they are typically available for one year. You will find more in your offer letter.

Quebec Provincial Government Scholarship

The Quebec Provincial Government Scholarship offers scholarships to students pursuing master’s or above level in Quebec. The value and duration of scholarships depend on what level the student is studying. Each application is evaluated on its merit.

CAD$25,000 is offered every 12 months and may continue for up to three years for a doctoral program. An extension of another 12 months is possible.

A scholarship of CAD$35,000 is offered for the postdoctoral program. However, it is not renewable.

Under this program, researchers may also avail of a scholarship of CAD$3,000 for short-term research. It is only for four months.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are offered to students who want to pursue their doctoral program in one of the participating universities in Canada.

The maximum scholarship amount offered is CAD$50,000 per year for three years. You can not renew it.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Government of Canada offers scholarships and fellowships to international students pursuing postgraduate studies in the natural and social sciences or health research.

Under this fellowship program, CAD$70,000 per year (taxable) is offered for two years.

Trudeau Scholarships and Fellowships

Scholarships are available under Trudeau Scholarships and Fellowships program for international students pursuing a doctorate at certain Canadian institutions.

Doctoral students can receive financial support through grants of $40,000 annually for three years. In addition, a research and travel allowance of $20,000 per year is available for three years.

Anne Vallee Ecological Fund

The Vallee Ecological Fund provides scholarships for international students to support their research into animals at the masters or doctoral level in Québec or British Columbia University. It offers two scholarships of CAD$ 1,500.

These scholarships are designated to help outstanding students from around the world pursue their studies in this field, and contribute to advancing knowledge about animal ecology.
